Stop Smoking By Jennifer Scott, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist
HOW TO ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE: STOP SMOKING
TO STOP SMOKING, STOP KIDDING YOURSELF. If you're currently a smoker (as I was 20 years ago), please understand that you are letting your life be controlled by a destructive habit, not an addiction. Saying "nicotine is an addiction" is a cop-out. Because if nicotine were an addictive drug like heroin, people would get hooked on nicotine patches or nicotine gum. And we would be able to substitute a heroin patch for heroin or an alcohol patch for alcohol. But we can't. They are addictive. Smoking isn't. When a substance is truly addictive, your body craves more and more to give you the same high. But look at yourself: you probably are now smoking about the same amount every day, give or take some unusual stress.
THE WAY OUT Now that you've eliminated the "I'm addicted and can't help myself" excuse, take a look at this destructive habit that's been controlling you. How would you like to end your feeling of powerlessness over it? How would you like to regain control over your health, your future and how long you live? Read on. The first step towards your empowerment is understanding how the mind works and why Willpower has failed you. HOW THE MIND WORKS Even though we seem to have only one mind, we actually have two: an Outer Mind (Conscious) and an Inner Mind (Subconscious), and they function differently. Think of them combined as a biocomputer. Your Conscious mind has been wired to reason things out, to search for solutions and to Try to make things happen using Willpower. You're probably most familiar with using this part of your mind. Let's now use smoking as an example. You analyze your problem about smoking. You search to find an easy solution, reasoning to yourself "Maybe I'll use the patch or that chewing gum." Then you desperately Try to stop on your own using Willpower. Notice how much effort you use without any positive results. Why? Because your habitual patterns of behavior have been programmed into that other part of your mind - your Subconscious - and habits can only change on the Subconscious level. This is the part of your mind that gets so deeply engrained with habit that you go on automatic - like when you're driving your car, washing dishes or lighting up without thinking. THE POWER OF SUGGESTION So if you feel out of control, just know that you can regain mental control by re-educating your Inner Mind through the power of suggestion. Now you can feel better about yourself. You didn't know that Trying and Willpower were part of your Conscious mind and, therefore, couldn't get the job done. You didn't know you had a Subconscious mind that could be retrained. And you didn't know that hypnosis is the doorway to your Subconscious. But now you know why it is that the harder you try to quit, the more you want to smoke. To read more about hypnosis, click here.
In this process, it's most important to practice self hypnosis one or two times a day until you master my simple yet powerful techniques. There's a bonus to this process: you'll develop the ability to open up all of your senses so that you can clearly see and experience yourself as a non-smoker. The principle is powerful: AS YOU SEE YOURSELF SO YOU BECOME. Or -- to put it another way -- you can say "I want to quit smoking" over and over again, but if you want to achieve results, your mental pictures must match your words. If you want to take back control of your life, you must learn how to partner with your Subconscious mind. I assure you: the act of quitting a destructive habit like smoking is just the beginning of many future successes for you. Each victory makes the next victory easier. Don't wait. You're ready. Just as I have helped many, many clients quit smoking in three sessions or less, I can help you.
